Based on conscious bedtime stories, author Andrew Newmans Why the last 20 minutes of the day matter. We are using neuroplasticity as a tool to interrupt the process of maladaptive behavior. We attach positive meaning to painful or challenging events by creating a safe, meaningful bedtime transition. A negative experience in a child’s day can produce a belief system that leads to behavioral changes. These changes are primarily protective. Caregivers have the opportunity to interrupt this process before the behavior develops. In his book Why we sleep, Neuroscientist Matthew Walker says, “sleep is when we build the architecture of our brain.” Bedtime is when we enhance and stabilize memory. As caretakers, we can change what the brain stabilizes and strengthens. We can attach positive meanings and beliefs to a negative situation. We can help our children react to stress and the environment with ease. This action can help prepare children for the following day. Ariana Huffington, creator of Huffington Post and Thrive Global Sleep, says a great day starts the night before. This session offers caregivers a brief description of the neuroscience behind sleep and tools for a positive and impactful bedtime transition.
